Lakewood D-32

The Lakewood company produces finest steelstring guitars in Giessen, Germany and has gained a lot of reputation even in the homeland of the steelstring guitar. All Lakewood guitars are made of solid wood only.  My D-32 was made in 1994 and it bears the serial-# 94.8160. The top is sitka spruce with a dark, almost orange colour. Back and sides are indian rosewood. The body has a maple purfling and a soundhole rosette of maple and rosewood. It features a three-piece mahogany neck with an ebony fingerboard that has no dots, inlays or binding at all.  The bridge is made of rosewood. Neck size at nut is 44 mm (about 1-12/16"). The string spacing at the nut from low E to high e is 37,2 mm (1-7/16"). The neck has a dovetail joint whilst Lakewood has switched to a bolted mortise and tenon joint recently. Scale length is 650 mm. The guitar has a satin laquer finish. It is equipped with gold plated Schaller tuners. The headstock is covered with a rosewood veneer and it shows the Lakewood logo, wich is an abalone inlay. The bracing shows  the conventional "X" with almost no scallops. Craftmanship is beyond any doubt as far as I can judge upon this. The guitar stays in tune and intonates very good all the way up the neck. Sound: Strong bass, straight mids and treble with a tendency to the midrange frequencies and a certain warmth, sweetness and a "woody" touch. The notes come well seperated, all in all similar to a Martin D-18 in once played in a shop. The neck is quite comfortable for fingerstyle.

Die Firma Lakewood in Giessen baut stahlbesaitete Gitarren bester Güte und hat auch im Mutterland der Stahlsaitengitarren einen Namen erworben. Lakewood-Gitarren werden nur aus massiven Tonhölzern gebaut. Meine D-32 ist 1994 hergestellt worden und hat die Seriennummer 94.8160. Die Decke besteht aus Sitka-Fichte von beinahe oranger Färbung. Zargen und Boden sind aus indischem Palisanderholz hergestellt. Der Korpus weist an den Rändern Zierstreifen aus Ahorn auf, die Rosette um das Schalloch besteht ebenfalls aus Ahorn und Palisander. Der Hals ist aus drei Mahagoniteilen zusammengesetzt, das Griffbrett besteht aus Ebenholz. Es weist keinerlei Einlagen auf. Der Steg besteht aus Palisander, die Halsbreite beträgt am Sattel 44 mm. Der Hals ist bei diesen älteren Lakewood-Modellen noch mit einer Schwalbenschwanz-Verbindung am Korpus befestigt,  wogegen bei Lakewood inzwischen die Hälse mit einer Nut-und-Feder-Verbindung und Dübeln angebaurt werden. Die Mensur beträgt 650 mm; die Gitarre ist seitenmatt mit Nitrolack lackiert. In der  Kopfplatte, die ein Palisander-Furnier trägt, sind vergoldete Schaller-Mechaniken befestigt.  Das Logo ist dort in Abalone eingelegt. Die Beleistung des Korpusinneren zwigt das bei stahhlsaiten-Gitarren konventionelle "X", woebi die Leisten nichtkonkav ausgearbeitet sind (kein "scalloped bracing"). So Weit ich es beurteilen kann, ist die Gitarre handwerklich hervorragend gebaut, si ist stimmstabil und intoniert sauber über das gesamte Griffbrett.
