and Nut are made of something I cannot identify, might be compound
material or bone.
Bindings: maple, fingerboard bound with cream plastic
bindings. Headstock logo inlay: Abalone. Front side of headstock is
sorrounded by an inlayed strip of sterling silver. Neck width at Nut: 43,5
mm (a bit more than 1-11/16). Strings spacing at nut: 38 mm (almost
1-1/2"). Neck width at 12th fret: 54 mm. Finich: UV cured laquer,

Jean Larrivée has - similar to Martin Seeliger, the
founder and owner of Lakewood guitars - learnt to built fine stringed
instruments from a master of the craft, set up business in the
70's/80's and gained reputation. Larrivée guitars are built of
solid wood only. They are not very common in Europe, but I'm certain that
they will be available and demanded more and more on the old continent.
Larrivée has developed an own unique bracing system,
still relying on the conventional "X"-bracing but with a
rectangular cross-section of the main braces and a symmetrial positioning
of the smaller struts, somewhat reminding to classical guitar architecture.
The D-body designed by Larrivée
is a guitar with a body shape of the typical dreadnought. Whilst mahogany
is almost never used for back & sdes of classical guitars (it has even
been estimated as a second quality tonewood for this purpose), it is very
common with steelstring guitars, especially with large bodies.

| The neck joint is at the 14th
fret. Despite that the fretboard is one of those narrow
"Bluegrass"-Fretboards it plays very comfortable wether chords,
melody or fingersrtyle. The reason might be the string spacing at the nut
with 38 mm (almost 1-1/2"). The neck has a medium height
"D"-shape with a fretboard much flatter than the ones of other
steelstring guitars. Actually the fretboard is close to plain. The guitar stays in tune very well. It
provides a very strong yet defined (not muddy) bass, ringing treble and handsome mids. The intonation is as perfect as can be with a
fretted instument; two and three tone chords (fretted and open strings
together) sound and intonate great. "Attack" and
"projection" are very good for a dreadnought, so this guitar is
a good fingerpicker also.Same as with the Larrivée "L"-body, the versatility of this
Dreadnought is one of it's outstanding
features. Besides that the guitar is a beauty. The top shows very even
grain and some kind of a vintage colour, reminding to honey. The guitar is
equipped with a transparent pickguart, almost invisible. With it's
maple binding, abalone soundhole rosette the D-05 appears tasty and
understated.

| Decke: Can. Sitka-Fichte.
Korpus: Mahagoni. Hals: einteilig Mahagoni. Griffbrett, Steg und Furnier
der Kopfplatte: Ebenholz. Stegeinlage und Sattel sind aus einem
bräunlichen Material, das ich nicht identifizieren kann, es könnte
Knochen, aber auch ein Verbundmaterial sein. Zierstreifen um den Korpus:
Ahorn. Das Griffbrett ist mit cremefarbenen Kunststoff-Streifen
eingefaßt. Das Logo ist an der Kopfplatte mit Perlmutt eingelegt
außerdem ist die Kopfplatte mit einem eingelegten Streifen aus
Sterling-Silber umrahmt, ein Zierrat, den in dieser Form nur Larrivée
bringt. Halsbreite am Sattel: 43,5 mm. Der seitliche Saitenabstand ist
aber mit 38 mm reichlich bemessen. Halsbreite am 12ten Bund: 54 mm.
Mensur: 650 mm.
Jean Larrivée hat - ähnlich
wie Martin Seeliger, der Gründer und Eigentümer von Lakewood Guitars -
sein Handwerk von einem Meister gelernt, in den 70er bzw, 80ern sein
Unternehmen gegründet und ausgebaut. Larrivée Gitarren sind in Europa
noch wenig verbreitet, aber ich bin sicher, daß sich das mit der Zeit
ändern wird.
Larrivée hat ein eigenes Beleistungsmuster entwickelt,
daß zwar auf dem altbekannten "X" basiert, sich aber in einigen
Punkten auch deutlich unterscheidet. Die Leisten haben einen Rechteckigen
Querschnitt und sind symmetrisch angeordnet, was ein wenig an die Bauform
der klassischen Gitarre erinnert.
Der von Larrivée gebaute D-Korpus entspricht mit seinen Abmessungen dem einer typischen
dreadnought-Gitarre. Während Mahagony beim Bau klassischer Gitarren
seltener Verwendung findet (man hör sogar, es sei für diesen Zweck
zweitklassiges Tonholz), ist es bei steelstring-Gitarren sehr
gebräuchlich, insbesondere bei Gitarren mit recht großem Korpus, wie
Dreadnoughts.

| Der Hals-Korpus-Übergang ist am 14. Bund. Obwohl der Hals wie ein schmaler Bluegrass-Hals wirkt, spielt er sich sehr komfortabel, was womöglich mit dem großzügig ausgelegten seitlichen Saitenabstand am Sattel liegen mag, es sind dort 38 mm.
Das Halsprofil ist ein mittelstarkes "D", mit einem Griffbrett, das bedeutend flacher ist, als bei den meisten andern Stahlsaitern. Das Griffbrett ist beinahe eben. Die Gitarre hält hervorragend die Stimmung und auch die Intonation ist ausgezeichnet. Si hat - wie bei einer Dreadnought zu erwarten - einen mächtigen Baß, der aber Mitten und Diskant nicht übertönt und gut definiert ist. Die Ansprache und Projektion sind sehr gut und machen das Instrument geeignet für Fingerstyle. Ähnlich, wie bei den "L"-Modellen ist ein hervorragendes Merkmal dieser Gitarre somit ihre Vielseitigkeit. Außerdem ist diese Gitarre ein sehr schön anzuschauendes Instrument. Die Decke hat eine gleichmäßige Zeichnung und weist eine honigfarbene Tönung auf. Sie ist mit einem durchsichtigen Schlagschutz ausgestattet. Mit seinen Ahornrandstreifen und der Abalone-Rosette erscheint die D-05 zurückhaltend und geschmackvoll.
