Ancient Shield-shaped Mandolin

A friend brought this old mandolin and handed it over as a gift. He had found it on a flea market and the mandolin was a ruin. The top had several cracks, one strip of tuners was missing, the peghead was broken at one side and someone had drilled a 1/2 " hole through the peghead. It had no strings, no tailpiece, no bridge. I gave the mandolin away to someone I knew of having restored his grandma`s mandolin, in order to get it restored. There it rested, almost forgotten. On my last birthday I received a package, opened it and much to my surprise and joy I found the old shield-shaped mandolin in it, fully restored.The peghead had new tuners, was newly veneered, there is a new bridge, a new tailpiece and a new fretboard. The cracks are repaired and the mandolin's finish is touched up.

Ein Freund brachte mir diese alte Mandoline vom Flohmarkt mit. Sie war allerdings eine restaurierungsbedürftige "Ruine", denn die Saiten, der Saitenhalter, der Steg und vier Mechaniken fehlten. Die Decke war gerissen, die Kopfplatte angebrochen und an einer Stelle von einem Vorbesitzer mit einem großen Loch versehen worden, wahrscheinlich zum Aufhängen als Zierrat. Ich gab die Mandoline einem Bekannten, von dem ich wußte, daß er die Mandoline seiner Oma erfolgreich restauriert hatte. Allerdings vergaß ich sie anschließend beinahe. Zu meiner großen Freude und Überraschung erhielt ich sie zu meinem letzten Geburtstag, vollständig restauriert einschließlich eines neuen Griffbrettes!
